Civil registration & statelessness

Support persons without documents or at risk of statelessness, asylum seekers and refugees to obtain or confirm a legal identity and secure residence and nationality.

Key programme activities

Legal assistance on:

  • birth registration and late registration of children;
  • correction of civil status data and confirmation of nationality;
  • access to identity documents and travel documents;
  • residence permits and procedures for refugees and persons with international or temporary protection.
  • Identification and referral of persons at risk of statelessness through community work, cooperation with CSOs and frontline institutions.
  • Strategic litigation and individual cases to remove administrative and legal barriers in civil status and foreigners’ procedures.
  • Legal and policy support to ministries, civil status offices and Parliament on reforms of the Civil Status Law, Citizenship Law, Law on Foreigners, asylum legislation and related by-laws.
